The timing job — belt vs. chain, by generation

This is the maintenance item that separates a healthy old WRX from a grenade, and the answer depends entirely on engine family:

  • EJ-series WRX (2002–2014, GD/GR): timing BELT.   • Premium fuel, always. Every turbo WRX wants 91 octane (AKI) or higher. Regular fuel makes the ECU pull timing to fight knock — you lose power and stress the engine. If you’re tuned, run the octane the map was built for.
  • Serpentine/accessory belt: inspect for cracks and glazing, replace per condition and manual interval.
