What WRX maintenance actually covers

A turbocharged boxer is not a hard engine to keep alive, but it is unforgiving about the things owners skip — oil on schedule and a cooling system nobody has looked at. Nearly everything here is routine, inexpensive and worth buying before you need it. The value is in doing it on time, not in buying exotic parts.

Engine oil and filter

The highest-value service item on a turbo boxer. Oil weight and capacity differ between the EJ and FA engine families, so confirm which engine you have before buying a case.

Air and cabin filters

Cheap and quick. The engine air filter is the one feeding a turbo, so it is not the place to stretch an interval.

Spark plugs

Boxer plug access is the reason people put this off. Buy the correct heat range for your engine, and note that a tuned car may want a colder plug.

Coolant, hoses and thermostat

The system most likely to be quietly neglected on a used WRX, and the one whose neglect gets expensive fastest.

Brake fluid

Time-based, not mileage-based — it absorbs moisture whether you drive the car or not.

Gear, differential and transmission fluids

On manual WRXs the gearbox and front differential share an oil; the rear diff is a separate fill with its own spec.

Battery, wipers and bulbs

The consumables that strand you or fail an inspection, and the easiest things to keep a spare of.

Before you buy Service parts are the most frequently mislisted category there is, because so many Subarus share them. Match by engine family and transmission, not by the word "WRX" in a listing title.
