What WRX exhaust actually covers
A WRX exhaust is four sections that are sold separately and behave very differently: the header and up-pipe at the engine, the downpipe below the turbo, the mid-pipe, and the cat-back or axle-back at the rear. Only the last of those is a genuine fit-and-forget bolt-on — everything upstream of it changes how the engine breathes and needs a tune to be safe and driveable.
- Cat-back and axle-back systems
- The sound-and-appearance change. No tune required, and the simplest way to get the boxer note without touching emissions hardware.
- Downpipes
- The real power part, and the one that requires a tune. Catted versions keep a catalyst in the system; catless versions are off-road-use-only in most places.
- Headers and up-pipes
- Equal-length versus unequal-length headers is the classic WRX trade — the unequal-length layout is where the signature rumble comes from.
- Mid-pipes and J-pipes
- The link between downpipe and cat-back. Check what your specific combination needs so you don't end up with two overlapping sections.
- Gaskets, hangers and hardware
- Exhaust fasteners on an older car rarely come out clean. Buy the gaskets and hardware with the part, not after you're already under the car.
Before you buy Exhaust fitment splits by engine and chassis, not just by "WRX". Confirm the section you're buying mates to what is already on the car — mixing brands across sections is where clearance and hanger problems come from.
