Every enthusiast car has a list of things that go wrong, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help anybody who’s about to spend money. The WRX is a genuinely tough, rewarding car — but the same turbocharged boxer that makes it special has a handful of well-documented weak points, and they differ by generation. Knowing them turns you from a nervous buyer into a smart one: you check the right things, you catch trouble early, and when something does let go you know exactly which part puts it right. The EJ cars (GD & GR/GV, 2002–2014) — the classic weak points
The EJ-series turbo boxer is the heart of the first two US WRX generations, and it’s a strong, tunable engine with two failure stories every owner should know.
Ringland failure — the headline EJ problem
On the 2.5L EJ255 (and the STI’s EJ257), the cast pistons can crack a ringland — the ledge that supports a piston ring, most often on cylinder four. The causes are detonation, a lean air-fuel condition, or a tune the fuel system can’t safely support. The symptoms are unmistakable once you know them: rising oil consumption, a misfire, blue smoke, and a car that’s suddenly down on power. The permanent fix is a rebuild with forged pistons, and — just as critical — a conservative, professional tune on premium fuel so the fresh engine doesn’t repeat history. Turbo oil starvation — the banjo bolt screen
The EJ turbo is fed oil through a banjo bolt that on many years contains a small screen filter. That screen can clog over time with sludge and starve the turbo of oil — and a dry turbo dies fast, sometimes taking oil-galley debris into the engine with it. The well-known preventive is to swap the restrictive screened bolt for a non-screened OEM banjo bolt and keep oil changes religiously on time so the turbo always gets clean, unrestricted flow. On a used EJ car of unknown history, this is a cheap early check that can save a very expensive part.
Wheel bearings — the GD/GR wear item
Both EJ generations are known for wheel bearings. The tell is a hum or growl that rises with road speed and changes as you weave gently side to side (loading and unloading each side). It won’t heal; a quality OEM-grade hub-and-bearing assembly pressed in restores it, and it’s one of the more affordable repairs on the list. The rest of the EJ list
- Rod knock / spun bearings — usually the downstream result of oil starvation, low oil, or abusive cold launches. Discipline on oil level and warm-up prevents it; a knock means a rebuild.
- Head gaskets — more an NA-2.5 story than the turbo cars, but high-mileage EJs can seep. Check for coolant/oil cross-contamination.
- Timing belt (interference engine) — not a defect, but a hard scheduled item on EJ cars around 105k that ends the engine if ignored. Full detail lives in the maintenance schedule.
The FA20 car (VA, 2015–2021) — modern turbo, modern quirks
The VA WRX moved to the direct-injected FA20DIT, and its issues are the classic modern-DI-turbo set rather than the EJ’s.
- Oil consumption — the FA20 has a reputation for using oil between changes. It’s rarely catastrophic, but you must check the dipstick often, because the turbo runs the oil hard and running low is exactly how bearings and ringlands get hurt.
- Direct-injection carbon buildup — with no port fuel washing the intake valves, carbon accumulates over the miles and can cause a rough idle or a slight loss of crispness. The accepted fix is a walnut-blasting intake-valve cleaning at higher mileage; a quality intake and a healthy PCV setup help slow it.

The VA is the highest-volume used WRX on the road, so parts — new bolt-ons on Amazon, used and OEM on eBay Motors — are abundant. Filter every listing to “2015–2021,” because VA parts don’t fit the VB.
The FA24 car (VB, 2022+) — too new to have a long list
The current FA24-powered VB is young enough that a real long-term failure record hasn’t been written, and early ownership has been broadly solid. Treat it like any modern DI turbo: watch the oil level and change it on time, expect some intake-valve carbon at high mileage, and if you tune, keep it conservative on quality fuel. Because the FA24 and its Global Platform are unique to this car, don’t carry VA fixes or parts over — confirm VB fitment on everything drivetrain- and boost-related.
A used-WRX buyer’s quick health check
Whatever generation you’re looking at, spend ten minutes on these before you hand over money:
- Listen at speed for a rising hum (wheel bearing) and under boost for a stumble (plugs, boost leak, or worse).
- Watch the oil — pull the dipstick, look for level and cleanliness, and ask the seller their change interval and oil spec.
- Ask about the tune on any modified EJ or FA car — who tuned it, on what fuel, and can they show the map. A vague answer on a boosted boxer is a real risk.
- Smoke on startup or under load points at rings/valve seals — investigate before buying.
- On an EJ car, ask about the timing belt and banjo bolt — both are cheap history questions that reveal how the car was cared for.
