WRX Suspension Explained: Layout by Generation, What Wears Out & What to Upgrade First

If you have searched “WRX suspension” and landed on a wall of coilover listings, this page is the missing step before that. It explains what the car actually has under it, what each piece does, which parts wear out and how they announce it, and the order to spend money in. Once you know that, choosing between springs and coilovers becomes an easy decision instead of a guess.
The short version
- Front, every generation: MacPherson strut — a combined spring/damper unit that is also a steering and suspension member.
- Rear, 2002–2007 (GD): MacPherson strut.
- Rear, 2008 onward (GR/GV, VA, VB): double wishbone — separate lateral links, a trailing arm, and a spring/damper unit that does not steer or locate the wheel by itself.
- The parts that actually go bad: endlinks, bushings, strut mounts and dampers — in roughly that order of frequency.

Two practical consequences fall out of that table.
First, the 2007/2008 line is a hard fitment boundary at the rear. A rear strut assembly for a GD has nothing to do with the rear damper, lateral links and trailing arm on a GR. Listings that advertise “fits Subaru WRX” across a decade of model years are exactly the trap the generations & fitment guide exists to keep you out of.
Second, WRX is not STI. Within a generation the STI generally carries stiffer bars, firmer damper tuning and its own geometry, and from 2011 the wider-body cars changed hub and wheel fitment as well — the details are in the bolt pattern & lug specs reference. Buy for your exact trim, and on a used car assume nothing about what a previous owner bolted on.
What each part actually does
Strut / damper
The damper controls the speed at which the suspension moves; the spring controls how far. That distinction is the single most useful thing to understand about suspension, because it explains why a stiffer spring on a worn damper rides badly and handles worse — the spring stores energy the damper can no longer absorb, so the car pogos.
On a MacPherson front, the strut is structural: it locates the top of the knuckle and forms the steering axis. That is why a bent strut affects alignment, and why front strut work always ends with an alignment.
Spring
Sets ride height and, with the car’s weight, the natural frequency of the suspension. Factory springs sag slowly with age — a WRX that sits a little lower than it did at 40,000 miles is usually not imagination.
Top hat / strut mount and bearing
The rubber-and-bearing assembly the strut bolts through at the top of the tower. The bearing lets the front strut rotate with the steering; when it dries out you get a creak or a distinct pop when turning the wheel at parking speeds. Replace mounts whenever you have the struts out — the labour is already paid for.
Sway bars, endlinks and bushings
A sway bar ties the left and right sides together so the car resists roll. Its effect is on balance: stiffening the rear bar transfers more lateral load to the rear axle, which reduces understeer and sharpens turn-in. That is why a rear bar is the classic WRX handling upgrade — a factory-tuned WRX understeers deliberately, and a rear bar is the cheapest honest way to dial some of that out.
Endlinks connect the bar ends to the suspension. They are small, cheap, and the most common source of WRX suspension noise.
Control arms, lateral links and trailing arms
These locate the wheel. Front lower control arms carry a large rear bushing that takes braking load; on the double-wishbone rear cars, the lateral links set camber and toe and the trailing arm handles fore-aft location. Their bushings are rubber, they perish, and worn ones show up as a rear end that feels vague or wanders slightly under load rather than as an obvious noise. Stiffer polyurethane or Group N-style rubber bushings are the usual upgrade — poly is firmer and lasts, but transmits more noise into the cabin.
Subframe and mounting bushings
The quiet ones. When rear subframe bushings are tired the whole assembly moves fractionally under power and braking, which reads as slop nobody can pin down. Rarely the first suspect, occasionally the right one.
The noise-to-cause table
Diagnose before you buy. Most WRX suspension complaints are one of these:

That last row matters on a WRX: the GD and GR cars are genuinely known for wheel bearings, and a bearing hum gets blamed on tires and suspension constantly.
Alignment: what you can and can’t adjust
Suspension work is only half the job — the geometry it leaves behind is the other half.
- Toe is adjustable front and rear, and it is where most tire-wear problems live. Any suspension change alters it.
- Camber goes more negative as a strut car is lowered. The factory adjustment range at the front on a strut suspension is minimal to nonexistent; the standard fix is a camber bolt (a “crash bolt”) in the lower strut-to-knuckle position, which buys you roughly a degree of correction. At the rear, many double-wishbone WRXs have an eccentric cam on a lower link; where the range runs out, adjustable lateral links are the answer.
- Caster is set by the geometry and is not meaningfully adjustable on a stock strut setup without offset hardware.
Two rules that save tires: get an alignment after any ride-height or suspension-component change, and ask for the printed before/after sheet. If the shop won’t produce one, find a shop that will.
The upgrade order that actually works
- Tires. Not a suspension part, and still the biggest single change to how a WRX grips and steers. Do this before anything else — see the wheel & tire fitment guide for sizing, offset and what fits without rubbing.
- Fix what’s worn. Endlinks, bushings, strut mounts, dead dampers. Upgrading around worn parts wastes money twice.
- Rear sway bar (and endlinks to match). The cheapest real handling gain on the car, and an easy afternoon in the driveway.

- Camber hardware and a proper alignment. The finishing step that makes everything above work — and protects the tires you started with.
Resist the urge to jump to step 4. A WRX on fresh bushings, a rear bar, good tires and a decent alignment out-drives a slammed car on tired hardware, every time.

A last piece of advice from under the car: suspension parts fail quietly and gradually, so most owners are comparing a new part against a worn one they never noticed getting worse. Before you plan a build, put the car on stands and put your hands on every link, bushing and mount. Half the time the “upgrade” you were shopping for is really a repair — and doing the repair first is what makes the upgrade feel like the one you paid for.
