This is the buying decision page: which WRX suspension setup to actually purchase, what the spec sheet numbers mean, and what has to go in the cart alongside it. The pattern worth noticing: three of the four rows are a damper purchase. The spring is the cheap part of the decision. Once you accept you’re buying dampers, coilovers stop looking like an expensive outlier and start looking like a matched kit with adjusters on it.

How to read a coilover spec sheet

This is where the money is either well spent or wasted, and it’s the part most “best WRX coilovers” lists skip entirely.

Spring rate — and the unit trap

Japanese manufacturers publish spring rates in kgf/mm; US manufacturers publish in lb/in. They are not comparable until you convert, and the conversion is fixed:

1 kgf/mm ≈ 56 lb/in.

So an 8 kg/mm front spring is about a 448 lb/in spring, and a 10 kg/mm rear is about 560 lb/in. Do that conversion before you compare two kits, because a spec sheet that reads “8/6” and one that reads “450/336” are describing nearly the same car. Higher is not better — a rate is only right relative to the car’s weight, its use, and the damper valving that has to control it. What you can judge without an engineering degree: whether the maker publishes the rate at all, and whether they publish separate front and rear figures.

Ride-height adjustment method — the single most important spec

There are two ways a coilover lowers a car, and they are not equivalent:

  • Spring-perch adjustment only. You wind the perch down the damper body. The car drops, but the damper is unchanged, so the drop is taken out of your bump travel — the suspension has less room to compress before it hits the bump stop. Drop it far enough and the bump stop becomes the spring.
  • Full-length (lower-bracket) adjustment. The lower mount threads on the damper body, so you lower the car by effectively shortening the assembly while keeping spring preload and available travel where they belong. Height and preload become independent adjustments.

For a street WRX this matters more than brand, more than damping clicks, and more than spring rate. A full-length kit at a sensible drop rides like a car; a perch-only kit at the same drop rides like a skateboard. If a listing doesn’t state which it is, treat it as perch-only.

Damping adjustment — what the clicks actually do

  • Non-adjustable: valved at the factory for one intended use. Fine, and often better than a badly-adjusted adjustable unit.
  • Single-adjustable (“32-way”, “30 clicks”): one knob moving compression and rebound together, typically weighted toward rebound. Useful, not surgical.
  • Two-way: compression and rebound on separate adjusters.
  • Three-way: splits compression into high-speed and low-speed. Track hardware; on a road car it’s mostly an opportunity to make the ride worse.

Count of clicks is marketing. The valving range those clicks move within is the actual product, and you can only judge it from how the kit is reviewed for its intended use.

Damper construction

Monotube: one tube, one large working piston, a gas chamber separated by a floating piston. Larger piston area and better heat rejection, so damping stays consistent when worked. Twin-tube: a smaller working piston with the oil reservoir in an outer sleeve — typically softer and more compliant over small inputs, cheaper to build, more prone to fade under sustained hard use. A canyon and track car wants the monotube’s consistency; a rough-road daily is often happier on a good twin-tube. Either can be excellent or awful depending on valving.

The rest of the checklist

  • Top mounts: pillowball mounts sharpen response and often add camber adjustment, at the cost of transmitting more noise into the cabin. Rubber mounts are quieter. On a daily WRX this is a real comfort decision, not a detail.
  • Bump stops: part of the spring, not a crash barrier — a progressive stop is designed to be contacted. Check the kit ships with them and that the drop leaves room to use them.
  • Serviceability: can the damper be rebuilt and revalved, and does the maker sell parts? A rebuildable coilover is a ten-year part. A sealed one is a consumable.
  • Dust boots and seals: the WRX lives in salt-belt driveways. Exposed damper shafts pit, and pitted shafts destroy seals.
  • What’s in the box: some kits include camber plates and endlinks; some price them separately. Compare the delivered set, not the headline.

WRX-specific fitment: the split that catches people

The 2007/2008 rear suspension change is the one that generates returned parts:

  • 2002–2007 (GD): MacPherson strut at the rear. The rear unit is a strut and locates the wheel.
  • 2008 onward (GR/GV, VA, VB): double-wishbone rear. The spring/damper unit doesn’t steer or locate the wheel; lateral links and a trailing arm do.

Rear parts do not carry across that divide, whatever the listing title claims. WRX and STI are also not interchangeable across every generation. What else goes in the cart

Almost nobody buys only the suspension. Budget for these up front, because discovering them mid-install is how a Saturday job becomes a Sunday one too.

  • Alignment. Non-negotiable. Lowering a strut car pulls camber negative and moves toe; driving on it scrubs the inside shoulders off a set of tires quickly.
  • Camber correction, if the alignment says so. Front: camber bolts, an eccentric in the strut-to-knuckle joint that buys back adjustment range. Rear (2008+): the lateral link eccentric, or adjustable links where that range runs out. Buy after the alignment reading, not before.
  • Adjustable endlinks. Lowering changes the angle the sway bar link works at, which preloads the bar. Adjustable links let you set the bar back to neutral at your new ride height.
  • Top hats and strut mount bearings, if you’re reusing anything from the old assembly. They’re a wear item and the strut is already off the car.
  • Brake and ABS line brackets. Check clearance and routing on a lowered strut before the car goes back on the ground.

Installing it without undoing your own work

  • Torque the bushed joints at ride height, not hanging. Control-arm, lateral-link and trailing-arm bushings are bonded rubber — clamping them with the suspension hanging locks the bushing in a twisted position, and it fights the suspension for the rest of its life and tears early. Get the weight on the wheels (ramps, or a jack under the hub) before final torque.
  • Let the car settle before aligning. Springs take a few hundred miles to find their working height. Align after that if you can, or accept a re-check.
  • Re-torque and re-check. Go back over the fasteners after a short shakedown, and again after the first proper drive.
  • Replace in axle pairs. A new damper on one side and a tired one on the other makes the car worse than two tired ones.
  • Set damping at one end of the range and work in. Full soft, drive it, then add clicks in even increments front and rear until it stops improving.

Used vs. new, part by part

This is where the two marketplaces genuinely split, and it’s worth being blunt about which parts survive a used purchase.

Reasonable used buys: sway bars (a steel bar doesn’t wear out), adjustable endlinks, adjustable lateral links, camber plates and bolts, subframe and mounting hardware, and OEM take-off assemblies from a low-mileage car. Take-off STI parts in particular exist in volume because so many cars get modified early, and they’re the cheapest route to better factory hardware.

Risky used buys: dampers and complete strut assemblies of unknown age — a damper is a wear item that gives no external clue until it weeps. Used coilovers are a genuine option if the model is rebuildable and you budget a rebuild and revalve into the price; if it isn’t rebuildable, you’re buying someone else’s remaining service life.

Buy new: springs are cheap enough that used isn’t worth the sag risk, and bushings, bump stops and hardware are consumables.
