The one idea that matters: the temperature window
Every friction compound has a range where it produces its rated grip. Below the window the pad feels wooden and won’t bite; above it the pad fades — the friction falls off and the pedal goes long. Street pads have a low, wide window starting near ambient, so they work the instant you pull out of the driveway. Track pads have a high window that only opens up once there’s real heat in the system — which is exactly why they’re noisy and weak cold, and exactly why they survive lap after lap when a street pad would have quit.
So the honest first question isn’t “how much grip?” It’s “how hot do my brakes get on my hottest regular drive?” Answer that and the compound picks itself.
The compound families
Brake pads are sorted by the friction material bonded to the backing plate. On a WRX you’ll realistically shop four families:
- Ceramic (NAO / non-asbestos organic and ceramic-hybrid). The modern daily-driver default. Quiet, low dust, light-colored dust that’s easier on wheels, and gentle on rotors. The trade-off is a lower heat ceiling — great for the street, out of their depth on track.
- Low-metallic / semi-metallic. More steel or copper content means stronger bite and a higher heat ceiling than ceramic, at the cost of more dust, more noise, and faster rotor wear. This family covers a huge range, from firm street pads to genuine street/track compounds.
- Street/track (dual-purpose) compounds. Formulated to bite acceptably cold and hold on through a track session. They’re the sweet spot for a WRX that mostly commutes but sees occasional track days or aggressive canyon use. Expect more dust and noise than a pure street pad.
- Dedicated track / endurance compounds. Built for sustained abuse — repeated hard stops from speed without fade. Endurance-oriented pads add pad-life and rotor-friendliness to that recipe for long sessions. All of them are noisy, dusty, and poor cold — not something you want on a car that only sees the grocery store.
Reading the trade-offs
Every step up the heat ladder costs you something on the street. Here’s the honest ledger:

There’s no free lunch: the properties that make a pad survive a track straight are the same ones that make it noisy and dusty in traffic. - Pure daily driver / commuter: a quality ceramic street pad. Quiet, clean wheels, easy on rotors, and more than enough for street stops. This is the right call for most WRX owners.
- Spirited street + canyon runs: a firm low-metallic street pad or an entry street/track compound for extra fade margin when you’re leaning on the brakes hard down a mountain road.
- Occasional track days on a street car: a street/track compound is the sweet spot — you can drive to the track, run the day, and drive home on the same pads.
- Frequent lapping: a dedicated track or endurance compound, ideally as a swap-in set you fit for the event and pull afterward, keeping street pads for daily use. Front and rear aren’t the same job
The WRX does most of its braking up front, so front pads run far hotter and wear faster than the rears. It’s normal to go through more front sets, and it’s fine to run a slightly more aggressive front pad with a milder rear — just avoid extreme mismatches that upset brake balance. Always replace pads as an axle set (both sides), never one corner.
Bedding: the free step people skip
A new pad only delivers its rated performance after it’s bedded in — a controlled series of stops that lays an even transfer layer on the rotor and cures the pad’s resin. Skip it and you invite judder, uneven deposits, and early fade. Follow the exact procedure on the box; track and endurance compounds are the least forgiving of a lazy break-in.
